TRINITY OF MONTI, 2026

Commissioned by the Embassy of France in Italy, GEO Logica carried out a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey at the Trinità dei Monti complex in Rome, with the aim of investigating the construction features of the floor structures using non-invasive geophysical techniques.

The investigation focused on the reconstruction of the internal stratigraphy of the floors, the determination of their thickness, and the characterization of their construction features. Particular attention was also given to the identification of potential structural elements, discontinuities, and anomalies within the investigated volume.

To investigate the different structural features and depths of interest, the survey was performed using two GPR antennas with central frequencies of 2 GHz and 400 MHz. The combined use of the two frequencies made it possible to exploit their different resolution and penetration capabilities, providing complementary information on the internal structure of the floors. two GPR antennas with central frequencies of 2 GHz and 400 MHz. The 2 GHzantenna, characterized by higher resolution, was used to investigate shallow features in greater detail, while the 400 MHz antenna provided greater investigation depth, supporting the characterization of deeper layers and structural elements.

The integration of data acquired at the two frequencies therefore provided a more comprehensive view of the internal configuration of the floor structures, supporting the identification of construction elements and potential anomalies that could not be directly observed at the surface.

The use of GPR also enabled the investigation to be conducted entirely non-invasively, preserving the surfaces and architectural elements of the complex. In a historically and architecturally significant setting such as Trinità dei Monti, this approach provides an effective means of obtaining detailed information on the built heritage while minimizing the impact of diagnostic activities.
